Dean, Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy
Melitzi Torres is a Dean at Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy. In her role as Dean at the Upper Elementary School, Melitzi focuses on the instructional coaching of the math and science teachers, school culture, and the leadership coaching of the school’s Diversity Chair. Melitzi specializes in bringing a focused perspective on challenges of equity and inclusion. Melitzi's distinguished background in education includes: experience as a classroom teacher, a district-level leader, and most recently, a school leader. In her work as an educator, Melitzi has implemented race-based affinity spaces across the school district and fearlessly advocates for families of marginalized identities. Melitzi pushes people around her to reflect on the voices they are including and the voices they have yet to hear. Melitzi graduated from Brown University in 2015 with a double concentration in the history of education and public policy. She was awarded the prestigious Urban Education Fellowship in 2017 and earned her master’s degree in Urban Education Policy in 2018. Melitzi is interested in continuing her learning in leadership coaching, horizontal organizational leadership, parental empowerment, empathetic organizations, and how data can be used to identify patterns of systemic racism across organizations.
